1st Race Weekend a Big Success: 4 Races per Class, No Incidents
Report from Inaugural Race Weekend at ButtonWillow Raceway, 04/10-11/04.
The American Racing Club (ARC) kicked off its series debut this past weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park, resulting in a massive success for the organization and competitors. The ARC’s unique format of providing as much track time as possible served to wear out many of the racers: “Between the 45 minute practice and qualification each morning, and the two 30 minute races each day, I ended up with over 3 hours of driving and racing this weekend. I’m exhausted!” noted Sedan A race winner Luc Noel.
With the extended on-track activities for the racers, the event format proved to be a bit of a revelation for the racers and their families. “Because it was Easter Sunday, we opened the track at lunch to allow driver’s to take their families for some laps around the circuit and give them a feel for what we do. It was also a small offering for our spouses and children giving up their Easter to let us race. We will look to make this a standard part of every race weekend,” commented ARC Race Director Marshall Pruett.
The ARC racing format and schedule for April 10th-11th included 2 races each afternoon. In the daily dual race format, the first race offered a regular starting grid based upon qualifying times; the 2nd race offered an inverted grid based upon the results of the 1st race.
Nate Chesmore, driving an OmniFab Cheetah D Sports Racer chassis won both Formula/Sportscar races on Saturday, closely followed by Ken Adelberg in a Radical Sportscar chassis. In Saturdays Sedan A races, the first race was won in commanding fashion by Luc Noel driving his ex-TransAm series Ford Mustang, with Joe Bregante coming second in his World Challenge-spec Dodge Viper Competition Coupe. The first Sedan A race featured Joe Bregante winning chased home by John Dearing in his similar World Challenge-spec Dodge Viper.
For Sunday’s events, Glenn Dulaine seized the opportunity to win both Formula/Sportscar races, followed home by ARC co-founder Troy Allison is the first race, and fellow ARC co-founder Dave Mills in the second race. The Sedan A events maintained consistency with Saturday’s races, with Luc Noel winning the first event and Joe Bregante taking the checkered flag in the second race. The next ARC event will be held at Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears Point) in Sonoma, California on Sunday, June 20th. It will be a single day event, and will follow our 2 races per day format. All racers new to the series and interested in competing should contact the ARC.
Reflecting upon the ARC’s first race weekend, co-founder Allison commented “As we are an emerging and growing race series and sanctioning body, look for the ARC to implement a number of improvements and changes in the coming months. Our goal is to add more classes of racing, larger fields, and to continue to provide a haven for racers that want inexpensive racing with a lot of track time and very little hassle; we even offer prize money, with the money earned being credited against future entry fees. Unlike some of the older, more rigid club/pro racing series, our goal is to innovate and adapt to changes and improvements rapidly.
